This week in 1863 the world's first ever subterranean passenger railway chuffed into a tunnel beneath the streets of Britain's capital carrying passengers on its maiden voyage.

A century and a half later, having survived the Blitz, terrorist attacks and 15,334 busker renditions of "Mr. Tambourine Man," the London Underground is still going strong.

Now expanded to 12 lines, 114,500 miles of track and 270 stations, the labyrinthine Tube network can seem intimidating to visitors.
