The upsides and downsides of a hotel art fair

"While there are certainly limitations -- especially in terms of space -- the advantages of having an art fair in a hotel are numerous and interesting," says Eunice Jung, the general manager of Asia Top Gallery Hotel Art Fair (AHAF).

This weekend, 60 guestrooms at the Westin Chosun in Seoul are being converted into miniature art galleries for the eighth AHAF.

Some 50 galleries from around Asia are showing more than 3,000 works by around 400 artists on the seventh and eighth floors of the hotel. Highlighted special exhibitions include DILLUSION by Lee Lee-Nam and Flower from Fareast by Cho Young-Nam and works by AHAF Young Artists.

While the concept of the hotel art show has been around for a few decades -- the first Armory Show, the largest contemporary art fair in New York, was held in the rooms of the Gramercy Hotel in 1994 --  the concept has become popular in Asia in recent years.

"First, there is a lot of money saved on accommodations as the participating galleries can take advantage of a special rate given by the participating hotel," says Jung.

Dolphin shows: Great fun or immoral and outdated?

The main attraction at Hong Kong's Ocean Park is a dolphin show with an earnest message about humans and animals living in harmony.

Yet, David Wong of Hong Kong animal rights group Animal Earth says the shows are "detrimental to moral thinking."

"Animal shows distort people's view of animals' natural behavior. The very act of capturing the animals strip people of all respect that they may have for animals."

The organization will participate in a protest on August 26 against "dolphin slavery" at Ocean Park, together with Hong Kong Dolphin Conservation Society and Animal-Friendly Alliance.

Sheraton is the most sought-after luxury hotel brand on the Internet in mainland China, followed by Hilton and Shangri-La, according to a recent report released by Geneva-based luxury market research firm Digital Luxury Group (DLG).

The report, called "The World Luxury Index China: Hotels," analyzed more than 170 million Internet searches from January to March 2012. All hits were generated in mainland China, with 91.49 percent coming from Chinese search engine Baidu and 8.51 percent from Google.

Searches were made in either simplified Chinese or English.

DLG said its purpose is to reveal Chinese Internet users' interest in -- and demand for -- luxury hotels.

The study also indicates that U.S. brands are best at marketing and catering to Chinese travelers.
